TO MILITARY ANALYSTS AND AUTHORS MAX BOOT AND MICHAEL O’HANLON

For proposing granting U.S. citizenship to foreign nationals in exchange for four years of U.S. military service. Boot and O’Hanlon are respected authors and analysts; they have not penned “A Military Path to Citizenship” without careful thought and consideration of the flak it would cause. True, as Boot and O’Hanlon point out, America is a land of immigrants. And there is a long history of foreigners fighting valiantly beside and as part of the American military. Nonetheless, this takes the argument a step too far. Should the U.S. embark on a recruiting drive in South Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe and East Asia, as the authors suggest, then we risk taking the potentially dangerous road of outsourcing our military defense to a foreign legion.
