To the Pentagon, for quickly declassifying and releasing a video recording of the controversial June 10 U.S. airstrike in the Afghan-Pakistani border region. Pakistan loudly condemned the strike as an unwarranted attack that killed 11 of its troops. The Defense Department was correct to respond swiftly to those accusations by releasing the evidence it had: Video from a Warrior unmanned aerial vehicle that captured the event. The Defense Department is standing firm that it was a legitimate strike against militant forces that had attacked coalition members. Too often in the past, the Pentagon has understandably, but misguidedly, clamped down on releasing information to the public — thus giving the upper hand in the propaganda war to the insurgents. Whatever the outcome of any investigation, it’s good to see the Pentagon take the lead in the information war and back up its military actions with its superior evidence. Sometimes it’s not about winning hearts and minds — it’s about getting the evidence out so that people can make up their own minds.
