In my Army War College seminar this year, I often wondered aloud why Marine Gen. Peter Pace could give his personal opinion [on don’t ask, don’t tell] and get excoriated, but when Adm. Mike Mullen did the same (unprompted, I find out from Capt. Charles Kels’ article), he is deemed to be courageous for his stand. But as we learned in a Washington Post article, his voluntarily given opinion was used by Sen. Carl Levin to initiate the “repeal now and let the military make the final decision” legislation. Amazing how quickly the military officer corps learns that it should leave politics to the politicians.”

COL. HOWARD AREY, ARMY, CARLISLE BARRACKS, PA. RESPONDS TO CAPT. CHARLES KELS’ ARTICLE “DON’T ASK, DON’T POLITICIZE,” JUNE AFJ ON “DON’T ASK, DON’T TELL” POLICY.
