Default Iran and the nuclear nightmare

Is Iran covertly developing atomic weapons in defiance of international constraints, and is it playing fast and loose with the facts as it rationalizes its nuclear activities? The Dec. 3 National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) states with high confidence that Iran shut down its nuclear weapons program in 2003. However, the NIE refers only to bomb design and not to the long poles in the weapons tent, plutonium and enriched-uranium production, both of which appear to have been continued by Iran.

.

There is no contradiction between The Iranian republic being in conformance with its obligations under the non-proliferation treaty and it progressing on the path to nuclear weapon technology

Until 95% enriched Uranium or suitably pure Plutonium is shaped into a bomb , there is no clear breaches , their only obligations is to inform the IAEC of their progresses under the original treaty , the additional protocol on snap inspection is not compulsory and while it was signed by the Iranian government it wasn't passed in parliament and thus remain a dead letter .

with 6000 centrifuges of the Urenco type 2 working at full efficiency , there should be enough U235 to make a bomb or two within a year , the problem is with the uranium hexafluoride , the stuff is a pain and the centrifuges are tricky beasts in the best of time .
There is the further problem of actually making a bomb , fizzers are a major losse of face .

It also would be a bit silly to go openly nuclear until there is a dozen of the puppies , to keep everybody cool if the mushroom appear .

Nukes are defensive weapons , a major life insurance for any regime
