I certainly can see the wisdom in the restraint the entire readership has shown in response to this lead paragraph. The Commander-In-Chief has spoken, most of us are not the General Officers privy to what exactly were all the military and geopolitical considertions that would invite a meaningful debate on this WARTIME highest eschelon decision.I will boldly say in this particular case a soldiers duty is respectful silence for the gravity of the subject and deference to the President and the Commanding Generals fully involved.Having said that instead of commenting on the event described,I would ask, should we still think critically on the outcome of such action and should we still analyze responsibly and for future reference any lessons learned?Absolutely,we fail our troops, endanger our country and are acting lke buck privates who failed basic training if we don`t.We have a certain loyalty as well to our DOD seniors so as not to "unnecessarily"tie their hands in so far as being able to adopt workable solutions to the dilemmas that WAR can present. That includes public comments in regards to press and negative fallout based on unguarded words and the ad hominum attacks that rightly or wrongfully can impact the ability of all our leaders, and just if not even more importantly, our subordinates. to do their duty and to know what that duty is.By the same token we should not be afraid to speak up and down the chain of command and truthfully communicate or knowledge.Case in point, the assertion has been made that costs are killing us as far as personnel goes.A more accurate analysis would be that the prices we are paying are. That would entail meaningful sacrifices from all quarters, not just cutting troops, funded benefits and salaries which is not seemingly desirable at the moment.Be assured all of our soldiers are acquainted with the requirements, let`s just make solemnly sure that this is done with justice and care and not just for a Professors` empoyment,a Congessmans vote or an officers promotion.I do not believe that pay raises for the Marine Corps can in any way whatsoever be considered a danger to National Security and I certainly do not believe such an arguement would have any merit or credence in the Hallowed Halls of Congress .Futhermore I know that the Our fighting troops know all too well the meaning of sacrifice (just visit a VA Hospital)."Belt tightening"is the last item they need to learn about.Nonetheless all of us need to learn, hopefully before it is too late.LtCol US ARMY Observer.
